Les 500 miles d'Indianapolis 2017 (en anglais : Indianapolis 500) est un évènement de l'IndyCar Series se déroulant le à l'Indianapolis Motor Speedway. La course se déroule sur 200 tours de circuit, soit 500 miles. Il s'agit de la sixième course de la saison 2017 d'IndyCar Series.

Y figurent notamment Alexander Rossi, vainqueur de l'édition 2016 et Fernando Alonso, le premier champion de Formule 1 en activité à participer à la course depuis plusieurs décennies.

Les courses du mois de mai ont officiellement commencé le , avec la quatrième édition du Grand Prix automobile d'Indianapolis. Les essais pour les 500 miles ont commencé le 15 mai et les qualifications ont eu lieu en les 20 et . Scott Dixon, vainqueur en 2008, a remporté pour la troisième fois de sa carrière la pole position, avec une vitesse de 373,632 km/h, soit la vitesse en pole la plus rapide depuis 1996. Le Carb Day, la traditionnelle journée des derniers essais, ainsi que la version annuelle du Pit Stop Challenge ont lieu pour le 26 mai. Les courses de support mettant en vedette le Road to Indy ont également lieu au cours du mois, y compris la Freedom 100 pour la série Indy Lights le 26 mai.

Contexte modifier

La course de 2017 est courue pour la troisième et dernière année avec les Kits aéro Chevrolet et Honda. À partir de la saison 2018, ils sont remplacés par les châssis Dallara DW12 (en) qui seront conçus sur une coque unique[1]. De plus, un gel des développements a été appliqué en 2017 et tous les kits aéro doivent par conséquent se conformer aux spécifications de 2016.

Parmi les transferts hors saison, à noter que l'équipe Chip Ganassi Racing est passé du motoriste Chevrolet à Honda. À l'inverse, A. J. Foyt Enterprises échange Honda pour Chevrolet. KV Racing Technology, qui a gagné la course de 2013 avec le pilote Tony Kanaan, a été vendue à Juncos Racing, une équipe bien installée dans le milieu. Sébastien Bourdais, auparavant chez KV Racing Technology, a signé chez Dale Coyne Racing pour la saison. Parmi les transferts importants, à noter celui de Josef Newgarden de Ed Carpenter Racing (en) en faveur de la Team Penske.

Organisation modifier

Pour des raisons de parrainage, l'évènement est officiellement désignée comme « 101st Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil » (« 101e 500 miles d'Indianapolis présentés par l'huile de moteur Penn Grade »).

L'hymne national est interprété par Bebe Rexha[2], tandis que Jim Cornelison interprète (Back Home Again in) Indiana[3].
