ir-cones,moss, bits of bark and wood, and sometimes a little grass. The eggs, from five to seven, or eight or nine in number,of an oval form, are greyisli white, spotted, and sometimesmuch blotted with reddish brown. Male; weight, about ssix drachms; length, about five inchesand three quarters; bill, dark lead-colour, dusky at the tip,dingy white at the base of the lower part; it is very harda7id pointed: a black streak rims from it through the eye tothe shoulder; iris, bright chesnut; over it is a white band;head, crown, neck on the Lack, and nape, light slate-colour; g4 ^UTHATCH. chin, white; throat and breast, buff-colour; the latter chesnuton the sides, and towards the neck, with a tinge of orange;back, light slate-colour. Tail, except the two middle feathers,which are light slate-colour, black at the base, grey at theend with a patch of white between these two colours on thethree outside feathers, lessening inwards; legs, toes, and claws,licrht brown, the former scaled. ■s-^fes

Fmwt—The Greek name of some bird, applied to the Wryneck.Torquilla—A factitious word, from Torqueo—To turn, twist, or wrest. This singularly elegant, though plain-coloured bird, a seeminglink between the Woodpeckers and Cuckoos, is found in thethree divisions of the so-called old world. In Europe, it fre-quents Lapland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Spain,Greece, Italy, and, though but seldom, Holland. It is saidalso to be met with in Kamtschatka. In Asia, it is foundamong the Himalaya Mountains; and also, according to Tem-minck, in Japan. In this country it is found in all the more southern counties,but mostly on the eastern side of the island, and, but rareh^,as far north as Northumberland.
