DescriptionDetail, Blind Arches, Church of Bet Meskel, Lalibela, Ethiopia (3223668550).jpg
A series of ten blind arches decorates the top of the facade of the 13th century Church of Bet Meskel in Lalibela, Ethiopia.
The arches are termed "blind" because they are carved in decorative relief. The arches do not penetrate the church wall, and they do not bear a load.
While the arches are superfluous from an engineering standpoint, they serve an essential purpose by identifying what would otherwise be a featureless l wall as belonging to an ecclesiastical building.
