The resistance of Piusdisappointed his views. Napoleon at last imagined that byremoving Pius to Fontainebleau, he might succeed in over-coming his finnness. Pius was again obliged to make along journey with the greatest secrecy. He arrived at Fon-tainebleau in June, 1812, and was lodged in the Imperialpalace and treated with marked respect. Napoleon had setout on his Russian expedition. After his return from thatdisastrous campaign, in December, 1812, he went to seethe Pope, embraced him, and treated him with studied at-tention; he also allowed several cardinals who were atParis to repair to Fontamebleau; and at last, chiefly NAPOLEON I. AND THE CONCORDAT. 57 through theu- persuasions, he prevailed upon the Pope tosign a new concordat the twenty-fifth of January, 1813.Napoleon hastened to pubhsh the articles of the Concordat,and to give them the force of laws of the empire; afterwhich he granted free access to the Pope, to all cardinalsand others who chose to repair to Fontainebleau.

The terrible stormsof the French Revolution had been long gathering by themisrule of previous kings. The dark clouds had becomethick and murky and highly charged with political hghtrnings and thiuiderings. At length the storm burst, and adreadful carnage ensued. France was deluged with blood.Among the numerous victims was Louis XVI., whose endforms a sad tragedy in historic annals. Louis XVL, King of France, was the second son of thePrince Dauphin, son of Louis XV., and of Maria Josephaof Saxony, daughter of Frederick Augustus, King of Po-land. He was born at Versailles, and named Due de Berri,1754, became dauphin by the death of his father,
