Titre
Medieval Limoge gilt copper alloy mount in the form of Jesus the Christ, from a processional cross. Close up of upper body.
Description
English: A near-complete gilt copper alloy mount from a processional cross, circa AD 1200 to 1300. The mount is in the form of the crucified or 'suffering' Jesus, and would have been attached to the processional cross in the centre at the top. The mount is very thin, convex, and measures 114mm x 45mm x 13mm.

Jesus is shown in a crucified position. On his head is a crown with three rises to it; one is located at either side and one is in the centre. The crown is worn but appears to be decorated around the perimeter by a double band of dots. The main panel of the crown appears to be decorated with a row of circles imitiating jewels. Jesus's head is shown angled slightly to his right, and his face is shown with a sorrowful expression. His eyes are large, oval, and perhaps half-closed or in a dying expression. His mouth is slightly downturned, emphasising the sorrow shown in his eyes. Jesus has a full beard and long straight hair flowing down to his shoulders. The hair is shown by a series of incised lines and the beard is shown by numerous dots.

Jesus's arms are outstretched; his left arm is missing its hand and the right arm is almost entirely missing. He wears no garment on his upper body. Small ridges in the surface of the metal depict the various features of his chest. His ribs are clearly shown on his left hand side, to which side his is shown slumped.

Jesus wears a knee-length garment which has numerous vertical folds emphasised by ribs and recesses. The recesses are filled with blue enamel. The top of the garment has either a belt or a thick seam, decorated with rows of dots. The centre of the belt at the front is decorated with a large circle filled with blue enamel.

The lower legs are visible below which merge at the ankles. The feet are missing.
