English: Mummy portrait from Fayum, Hawara cemetery, in modern-day Egypt. Thin lime (Tilia species) panel with encaustic mummy portrait of a Petrie's "red youth", with curly light beard and mustache, facing left. A sharp tool was used to delineate the shape of the face, ears, and eyebrows. First to second century AD. Excavated by Flinders Petrie. Analysed by Jodrell Laboratory, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and National Gallery. Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology, London. With thanks to the Petrie Museum, UCL.
