Meet a chunk of NGC 4571, in two colours. According to SEDS, for nearly two centuries, this galaxy was thought to be Messier 91, based on Charles' description and William Herschel's interpretation of it. It's a pretty low-contrast galaxy and doesn't seem all that exceptional. It's still a galaxy though, which is pretty crazy. I'm still not super sure about what I'm doing (will I ever be), so I'm trying to "start" simple. This was my first time really diving into a full WFPC2 image and I'm pretty happy with the results (which is mostly due to the fact that this is a very nice dataset). In the upper left is a diffraction spike from a nearby star. Cosmic rays were a little confusing with this one and I wasn't sure what to keep and what to erase, so I tried to be careful. I very slightly increased the saturation and I sharpened the dust lanes near the centre. I think I've still got to work on colour. Morphological type: Sc(dSc) Red: WFPC2 F814W Green: pseudo Blue: WFPC2 F555W Edit: This one has actually been done before, which I hadn't realised. |
