DescriptionToyota Coliseum, New York State Fairgrounds - 20210321 - 02.jpg
English: The New York State Fairgrounds' Toyota Coliseum, as seen in March 2021. Dedicated in 1934 in honor of Henry Hiram Wing, an esteemed professor of animal husbandry at Cornell University who was instrumental in advocating for the construction of the coliseum eleven years prior, the Coliseum sports a design - most likely the work of state architect Sullivan Jones - that's very much in keeping with what typified stadium architecture at the time; namely, a muscular Neoclassical design with an entrance framed by monumental Roman arches, as seen here. A modest degree of detailing is seen in the decorative ancone cornerstones atop said arches as well as the denticulated cornice atop. The Coliseum was initially built in response to the New York dairy industry's request for a more suitable venue for cattle and agricultural equipment shows, but it quickly took found secondary usage as a sports venue: it served as the home of the International (later International-American) Hockey League's Syracuse Stars from 1930 through '40, the NBA's Syracuse Nationals from 1946 through '51, and the Syracuse Orangemen basketball team from 1947 through '51.
