Les chansons de cet album, d'une tonalité et un esprit plus mélancoliques que d'habitude, ont été inspirées à Frank Sinatra par sa séparation d'avec son grand amour passionné, l'actrice Ava Gardner[2].

Il est le premier album de la liste des 1001 albums qu'il faut avoir écoutés dans sa vie[3].
