Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining
L'Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) est une association à but non lucratif anglaise importante, dont le champ d'action concerne le cycle complet des matériaux, de la prospection minière au recyclage. Son rôle est de développer tous les aspects de la science des matériaux, de l'ingénierie, de la géologie, des procédés industriels.

Histoire
modifierL'Institut a ses racines dans l'Iron and Steel Institute (à ne pas confondre avec l'American Iron and Steel Institute), qui fut fondé en 1869 pour renforcer les maîtres de forges face à la concurrence européenne qui se renforçait. Cet institut reçu ses chartes royales en 1899 et 1975[1].
L'Institut du fer et de l'acier a fusionné en 1974 avec l'Institut des métaux, qui en 1993 est devenu une partie de l'Institut des matériaux, qui à son tour est devenu une partie de l'IOM3 en 2002[2].

Activités

La médaille d'or de Bessemer est décernée chaque année, par l'IOM3 pour des services exceptionnels rendus à l'industrie sidérurgique, à l'inventeur ou au concepteur de toute innovation significative dans le processus utilisé dans la fabrication de l'acier, ou pour l'innovation dans l'utilisation de l'acier dans l'industrie manufacturière ou dans l'économie en général. Le récipiendaire est censé préparer et présenter la conférence Bessemer[3].
Elle est créée par l'Institut du fer et de l'acier en 1874 par Sir Henry Bessemer et est attribuée pour la première fois à Isaac Lowthian Bell en 1874[4],[5],[6].
