Kero One
Kero One est un MC, producteur et DJ hip-hop coréano-américain originaire de San Francisco, en Californie. Il a été reconnu pour avoir réintroduit le son jazz rap au début et au milieu des années 2000 avec son album jazz-hop Windmills of the Soul.
Histoire
modifierAvant de se consacrer à la musique, Kero One travaillait comme concepteur web. C'est en autofinançant ses débuts grâce à ses cartes de crédit et à son propre matériel qu'il a produit son premier disque 12 pouces, Check the Blueprints, sorti en 2003 sur son propre label, Plug Label.
Sur les tout premiers exemplaires distribués à travers le monde, un seul a par miracle atterri dans une minuscule boutique de disques à Tokyo. Quelques semaines plus tard, il y a été repéré par un DJ local qui l'a joué en club le soir même, déclenchant une avalanche de demandes — dont celle d'un dirigeant de label japonais, qui l'a contacté sans attendre pour commander 3 000 exemplaires.
En 2012, Kero One a sorti son quatrième album solo, Color Theory, dont les frais de mastering et d'ingénierie sonore ont été financés par les fans via une campagne Kickstarter ayant récolté plus de 10 000 $. Son premier extrait, « What Am I Supposed to Do », s'est classé dans les charts de Radio Nova en France, de J*Wave au Japon et de WDR Funkhaus Europa en Allemagne. La chanson a par ailleurs attiré l'attention de Stevie Wonder, qui a personnellement invité Kero One à l'interpréter le 15 décembre 2012 au Nokia Live Theatre, lors de son 17e concert de bienfaisance annuel House Full of Toys, aux côtés de Bruno Mars.
Plus tard, Kero One a lancé un nouveau projet collaboratif baptisé Kesna Music, en s'associant avec la chanteuse et vidéaste YouTube Esna Yoon. Ensemble, ils ont publié le single « Is It Love ? » le 16 juillet 2013.
L'année 2015 a marqué un tournant international pour Kero One, qui a apporté son style jazz-hop caractéristique en Corée en produisant la chanson « Ordinary Love » pour le rappeur coréen Park Kyung de Block B et Park Bo-Ram, propulsant le titre à la première place des charts Melon. Plus tard cette même année, il a publié un album de future soul sous l'alias « Kero Uno », intitulé Reflection (noitcelfer) Eternal, qui a figuré sur la liste des meilleurs albums de 2015 de ListenToThis sur Reddit.
Par la suite, en 2016, la longboardeuse sud-coréenne Hyo Joo Ko a utilisé son morceau « So Seductive » (2012) dans une vidéo Instagram. Lorsque l'artiste l'a republiée sur sa page Facebook, la publication est devenue virale, atteignant 26 millions de vues. Ce succès a valu à Hyo Joo Ko une renommée internationale tout en ravivant l'intérêt pour cette ancienne chanson.
