L'État américain de Virginie-Occidentale est divisé en 232 municipalités, qui ont le statut de city, de town ou de village[1].

Création et statut modifier

Une municipalité peut être créée lorsque sont réunies 100 personnes sur une superficie de moins de 1 mille carré (2,6 km2). Sur des territoires d'une plus grande superficie, la densité de population doit être d'au moins 500 habitants par mille carré[2], soit environ 1 280 habitants par km².

Les municipalités de Virginie-Occidentale sont divisées en quatre classes[2] :

  • classe I au-delà de 50 000 habitants ;
  • classe II entre 10 001 et 50 000 habitants ;
  • classe III entre 2 001 et 10 000 habitants ;
  • classe IV (towns et vilages) en dessous de 2 000 habitants.

Les municipalités de trois premières classes peuvent adopter une charte « Home Rule »[2].
