- ↑ Le plus grand lion connu mesurait 3,35 m. Un lion mâle exceptionnellement lourd trouvé près du mont Kenya pesait 272 kg. Le plus long lion sauvage aurait été abattu près du parc national de Mucusso, dans le sud de l'Angola.
- ↑ Le débat sur la question de savoir si la panthère nébuleuse de la Sonde est simplement une sous-espèce de la panthère nébuleuse est toujours en cours ; il semble donc préférable de considérer ces deux espèces comme étant identiques.
