Delia Wanda Oppo est une scientifique américaine qui travaille sur la paléocéanographie où elle se concentre sur les variations passées de la circulation de l'eau et l'impact subséquent sur le système climatique de la Terre. Elle est élue membre de l'American Geophysical Union en 2014.
Formation et carrière
modifierDelia Oppo est titulaire d'une licence de l'Université de l'État de New York à Albany (1981)[1]. Elle obtient son doctorat de l'université de Columbia en 1989, où elle travaille sur les changements dans la circulation thermohaline[2]. Après son doctorat, elle commence à travailler à la Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution en tant que scientifique postdoctorale avec William Curry[3]. En 2006, elle est scientifique senior à la Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution[1].
En 2014, Delia Oppo est élue membre de l'American Geophysical Union qui l'a citée "pour ses contributions à la compréhension des causes de la variabilité climatique de la Terre et de son lien avec la circulation océanique et le cycle hydrologique"[4].
Recherche
modifierLa recherche de Delia Oppo suit les changements passés de la circulation océanique, et l'impact de ces changements sur le climat régional. Ses recherches utilisent les isotopes stables du carbone qui sont capturés dans les coquilles des foraminifères[5],[6],[7]. Dans l'océan Atlantique, ses recherches ont examiné les changements dans la circulation des eaux profondes et intermédiaires[8],[9] et la variabilité climatique dans l'Atlantique Nord[10],[11],[12]. Ses recherches ont révélé un affaiblissement du Gulf Stream[13], qui pourrait avoir un impact sur les régimes climatiques aux États-Unis et en Europe[14]. Elle étudie également les événements climatiques abrupts du passé[15] et les changements du contenu thermique de l'océan au cours des 10 000 dernières années[16], recherches qui montrent que l'océan se réchauffe plus rapidement que par le passé[17].
