Tim LaHaye ou Timothy Francis LaHaye, né le , et mort le , est un pasteur chrétien évangélique baptiste et un écrivain.

Biographie modifier

Timothy Francis LaHaye est né le à Detroit, au Michigan; il est le fils de Frank LaHaye et Margaret LaHaye[1]. La mort de son père quand il avait neuf ans l’a bouleversé, mais il a été encouragé par la parole d’un pasteur lors de l'enterrement qui a dit que lors du retour de Jésus-Christ, les croyants morts ressusciteraient[2]. En 1944, il s'est enrôlé dans les United States Army Air Forces, après avoir terminé l'école du soir[1]. En 1947, il a épousé Beverly Ratcliffe[3]. Ensuite, il a étudié à la Bob Jones University et a obtenu un Bachelor of Arts en 1950 [1].

Ministère modifier

Il a été pasteur à Pumpkintown dans le comté de Pickens (Caroline du Sud) [3]. En 1950, il a été pasteur d'une église baptiste à Minneapolis jusqu'en 1956[2]. Après cela, il a déménagé à San Diego, où il a été pasteur de la Scott Memorial Baptist Church (maintenant appelée Shadow Mountain Community Church) de 1956 à 1981[4]. En 1971, il a fondé le Christian Heritage College, maintenant connu sous le nom de San Diego Christian College. En 1972, il a aidé à établir l'Institute for Creation Research à El Cajon, avec Henry M. Morris. En 1976, il a écrit le livre L'acte conjugal: La beauté de l'amour sexuel avec sa femme Beverly[5]. En 1977, il a obtenu un Doctorat du ministère du Western Seminary [1]. En 1979, il a encouragé Jerry Falwell à fonder la Majorité morale et a siégé à son conseil d'administration[6]. En 1995, il a débuté la série de 16 livres Les Survivants de l'Apocalypse avec l’écrivain Jerry B. Jenkins[7].

Vie privée modifier

LaHaye est décédé le des suites d'un accident vasculaire cérébral, à l'âge de 90 ans, dans la ville de San Diego [6].

Distinctions modifier

En 2005, il a été nommé l'un des 25 évangéliques les plus influents d'Amérique par le Time Magazine pour ses livres Les Survivants de l'Apocalypse [8]. Il a reçu un Doctorat honoris causa en littérature de l’Université Liberty [2].

Opinions modifier

Son livre de fiction Mind Siege: The Battle for Truth in the New Millennium écrit avec David Noebel et publié en 2001, raconte une conspiration mondiale dans le but de changer les États-Unis en un pays socialiste, partisan d’un Gouvernement mondial. Pami les responsables de cette conspiration, il y aurait: « Les Illuminatis, la Commission trilatérale, l’Union américaine pour les libertés civiles, la National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, l'Organisation nationale pour les femmes, Planned Parenthood, les principales chaînes de télévision, les grands journaux et magazines, le Département d'État, les principales fondations caritatives (Rockefeller, Carnegie, Ford), les Nations unies, l'aile gauche du Parti démocrate, l'Université Harvard, l’Université Yale et 2 000 autres collèges et universités » [9].
