Which languages do you translate from? (If you translate from English to another language, please mention it here.)
From English to Maori
Do you translate from more than one language at a time? (For example, a translation could be primarily done from the German-language Wikipedia, but with parts translated from the Italian-language and French-language Wikipedias.)
No
Do you add information not in the text of the source language? If so, during or after your translation?
No
Do you correct errors in the source language article when you come across them while working?
Not applicable, since these are articles I write.
How do you choose the articles you translate?
I am writing a series of articles on small towns in New Zealand. If there is a corresponding article in the Maori wikipedia, I use a series of stock phrases to add a location map, census information, distances and directions to nearby localities, and information on the local school to that article. I don't start new articles because my list of stock phrases isn't large enough.
What kind of rhythm do you work at? (Frequency of translation, length of time spent translating...)
Four-Five times a week, and the translation itself takes me 10-15 minutes per article.
Do you translate more for one wikiproject in particular?
While my edits come under Wikiproject New Zealand's scope, they're not part of any organised effort.
Do you use your home Wikipedia's version of Project:Translation, or do you translate solo? In both cases, why?
I translate solo (with the help of mi:User:Kahuroa who is our best speaker of the Maori language). I'm not aware of any support for translation into Maori at the Translation project.
Have you translated at your "real-life" job? Are you a professional translator?
No, as I say above, I don't in fact know the language I translate into.
What do you think of your work in translation on Wikipedia?
The Maori Wikipedia at present has a low "depth" rating because many of its articles have been created by a bot. I'm fleshing those articles out and creating a better base for someone in the future in improve upon. I consider this a valuable service.
How do you think your work is seen by the rest of the community?
The other active user on Maori Wikipedia seems pleased with my work. People I know who speak Maori but are not editors on Wikipedia believe my work is worthwhile.
Have you seen criticism of translations because the bibliography and sources are primarily or entirely in a foreign language?
No
Have you translated the text in images (diagrams, graphs...) while translating articles using said images?
Minimally, because I cannot write the language well enough to be confident that I have the grammar correct. I often leave the caption of images blank or give only a dictionary word to indicate the subject. There is no free online translation tool such as Babelfish as far as I am aware, and online Maori-English dictionaries are generally untrustworthy.
Would you like to see something changed in the way translation is done on Wikipedia?
I'm not part of the mainstream of the translation effort, so I have no comment here.
