Les schistes de Spence sont un lagerstätte du Cambrien moyen présents dans le sud-est de l'Idaho et le nord-ouest de l'Utah. Cette unité lithostratigraphique, membre de la formation de Langston, a été décrite et nommée par le paléonthologue Charles Walcott d'après le site type de Spence Gulch, dans la chaîne de montagne de Bear River , Idaho. Les schistes de Spence, datés d'environ 506 à 505 Ma possèdent un mode préservation de fossiles de type shistes de Burgess (en) (BST)[7],[11], https://www.researchgate.net/publication/271076317_Burgess_Shale-type_preservation_and_its_distribution_in_space_and_time ; [12],[10]

En 1896, Robert S. Spence, un paléontologue amateur originaire de l'Idaho, envoit à Walcott un fossile qu'il retrouvé sur le site de Blacksmith Fork, dans les montagnes de River Bear. Spence continue a transmettre à Walcott d'autres fossiles mis en évidence sur le site de Blacksmith jusqu'en 1906. Walcott explore le site de Blacksmith en 1906.
