Introduction modifier

The Mauritius Institute of Education (MIE) is a parastatal body, working under the aegis of the Ministry of Education and Human Resources. Set up in 1973 with the prime objective of modernizing the education sector and endowing it with a professional teaching workforce, the MIE provides training for the pre-primary, primary and secondary sectors of education, targeting all cadres, including teaching and management. The training provided is in line with state of the art pedagogical practices and the constant bench-marking of courses offered according to international standards ensures that the qualifications delivered by the MIE are recognised around the world. The MIE is also responsible for Research and Curriculum Development. It is the body in charge of developing the curriculum, textbook writing and evaluation.

1973 to date modifier

The Mauritius Institute of education was created in 1973, as an institution devoted to Teacher education, Curriculum Development and Research. Mauritius had obtained independence in 1968 and there was a pressing need to professionalise the education sector, effect change in the curriculum and to engage in research in education. Today, MIE has evolved as an institution of repute, working closely with the Ministry of Education and Human Resources to drive a number of educational projects and to be at the forefront of curriculum change and innovation in the pre-primary, primary and secondary sectors of education in the Republic of Mauritius. In line with its strategic objectives, MIE offers certificate, diploma, undergraduate and post graduate and doctoral programmes in Education. The MIE dispenses courses, solely and jointly with the University of Mauritius, University of Technology of Mauritius, and supports other institutions, including the Mauritius College of the Air and Mauritius Examinations Syndicate, through its professional expertise and knowhow. MIE also engages in major reforms in Education at national level through its close association with the Ministry of Education and Human Resources, advising the Ministry and helping the latter implement its major educational policies. To achieve international standards in the delivery of its services, the MIE has established networks with institutions that are engaged in similar activities worldwide and works in partnership with the University of Brighton (UK), University of KwaZulu Natal (South Africa), Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) (India); IEFM (Reunion), Universite de la Reunion, and Edith Cowan University (Western Australia), Sains University (Malaysia), Middlesex University (UK).

Uniqueness modifier

"Not only has the MIE enabled thousands of teachers to aspire to a better professional status, it has also done so by providing opportunities to all those who could not, or would not, leave the country for further education abroad.”

The movement of Mauritians to foreign countries for further education would have cost the country heavily not only in terms of foreign exchange but also in terms of increased likelihood of brain drain... provision of opportunities for professional development locally is a significant salutary facility for secondary school leavers, especially women who have traditionally had less opportunity for studies abroad." (Ambassador Dr. Olusegun Akinluyi, Commonwealth Abroad Service Project, in MIE the Way Forward, 2003)
