Biographie
modifierWilliam James Guy Carr naît le à Formby dans le Lancashire en Angleterre. Il effectue sa scolarité en Écosse[1]. À l'âge de 14 ans, il s'engage comme mousse dans la marine marchande[1],[2]. Pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, Il sert comme officier dans la Royal Navy à bord d'un sous-marin[1],[3]. Il est membre des services de renseignement[4]. Il donne à partir de 1931 des conférences sur le thème de la conspiration communiste auprès de cercles influents comme le Canadian Club (en) de Toronto[5],[3]. Il publie également des ouvrages à succès sur son expérience de sous-marinier[3].
Il est officier de contrôle pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, puis conférencier (1944-1945) dans la Marine royale canadienne[5]. Il s'établit après la guerre à Willowdale près de Toronto où il fonde et dirige la National Federation of Christian Laymen, une ligue catholique anticommuniste[6],[3].
Il se fait connaître en 1958 par la publication de Pawns in the Game (Des Pions sur l'échiquier)[5],[6]. Il meurt le à l'hôpital Sunnybrook (en) de Toronto[1],[2].
Thèses
modifierSon livre Pawns in the Game (Des Pions sur l'échiquier), réédité plusieurs fois et vendu à un demi-million d'exemplaires, a contribué de manière importante à la diffusion en Amérique du Nord de la thèse du complot des Illuminati[6],[3]. Il a notamment influencé Robert W. Welch Jr. fondateur de la John Birch Society[7], et Pat Robertson[3],[8].
