Attaque du camp Holloway
L'attaque du camp Holloway est une bataille qui se déroule au premières heures du au début de la Guerre du Vietnam. Elle oppose les troupes du Front national de libération du Sud Viêt Nam (alias Việt Cộng ou VC) qui lancent l’assaut contre le Camp Holloway de l'United States Army. Le camp Holloway est une base d'hélicoptère construit par l'armée américaine près de Pleiku en 1962, afin de soutenir les opérations militaires sur les Hauts plateaux du centre du Viêt Nam.

modifierLorsque la nouvelle de l'attaque du Camp Holloway parvint à Saïgon le matin du 7 février 1965, le général William Westmoreland, le conseiller à la sécurité nationale McGeorge Bundy et l'ambassadeur Maxwell Taylor se rendirent à Pleiku pour constater les dégâts. Bundy appela ensuite le président Lyndon B. Johnson pour lui faire part de la demande du Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV) d'effectuer des frappes aériennes de représailles contre le Nord-Vietnam. En réponse à cette demande, Johnson convoqua en urgence une session du Conseil de sécurité nationale (sigle en anglais: NSC) afin de discuter de la nécessité de représailles contre les communistes vietnamiens [2]:80.
Après la réunion du NSC, le président Johnson ordonna brusquement une frappe de représailles. Quatre heures plus tard, les porte-avions américains, naviguant dans le Golfe du Tonkin, pilonnèrent la caserne et les installations militaires de Đồng Hới, à quatre-vingts kilomètres au nord de la zone démilitarisée. Cette opération, baptisée Flaming Dart (en), marqua le premier raid aérien américain contre le Nord-Vietnam depuis le mois d'août précédent [2]:81.
