Né dans le Wisconsin, Otis B. Thayer est l'un des réalisateurs qui ont travaillé régulièrement avec la maison de production Selig dans les années 1910. Spécialisé dans le Western, de 1911 à 1928, l'année qui a terminé sa carrière, il a dirigé une soixantaine de films. Il a été aussi acteur et scénariste.
