Roger Hawkins ( – )[1] est un batteur américain surtout connu pour avoir joué au sein du groupe d'accompagnement de studio connu sous le nom de Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section ou The Swampers, du Muscle Shoals, Alabama[2]. Il est célèbre notamment pour ses enregistrements avec Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Percy Sledge, Paul Simon, Rod Stewart, Bob Seger et beaucoup d'autres[3],[4].

Jerry Wexler, journaliste de Billboard et producteur d'Atlantic, a qualifié Roger Hawkins de « plus grand batteur du monde ». En 2016, le magazine Rolling Stone classe Roger Hawkins au 31e rang de sa liste des « 100 meilleurs batteurs de tous les temps »[5].
Biographie
modifierNé à Mishawaka, dans l’Indiana, Roger Hawkins grandit en Alabama, où il développe très tôt une solide culture du rhythm and blues, de la soul et du gospel. Autodidacte en grande partie, il forge un style de batterie reconnaissable entre tous : sobre, précis, profondément groovy, toujours au service de la chanson.
Dans les années 1960, il devient le batteur attitré des studios FAME à Muscle Shoals, puis cofonde en 1969 les Muscle Shoals Sound Studios (M.S.S.S.) avec Jimmy Johnson, David Hood et Barry Beckett. Ensemble, ils forment le noyau de la Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section (« section rythmique de Muscle Shoals »), également surnommé The Swampers.
Hawkins joue sur des centaines d’enregistrements devenus des classiques, collaborant avec des artistes majeurs tels qu'Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Etta James, Otis Redding, Percy Sledge, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Cher, Rod Stewart ou encore Traffic[3],[4]. Il travaille également avec plusieurs artistes français comme Eddy Mitchell, Johnny Hallyday ou Axelle Red[6].
Sa batterie, discrète mais implacable, est l’un des piliers du son de Muscle Shoals, caractérisé par sa chaleur, sa profondeur et son efficacité émotionnelle.
« Jouer avec les mêmes gars pendant si longtemps, c'est vraiment difficile d'impressionner Barry, David ou Jimmy, parce qu'ils m'ont déjà entendu jouer. Et c'est pareil pour eux. Si Barry fait un solo de guitare incroyable, je ne le félicite pas ; c'est normal qu'il le fasse. Je ne sais pas ce que c'est, mais quand on se réunit tous les quatre pour jouer, c'est comme si un poids nous était enlevé des épaules. C'est comme si on se disait : "Ça y est, on est à la maison". »

Hawkins meurt à l'âge de 75 ans à son domicile de Sheffield, Alabama[8]. Il souffrait de nombreux problèmes de santé, notamment d'une bronchopneumopathie chronique obstructive[1].
