Ivan Couée
Ivan Couée is a French plant biologist specialising in the regulation of metabolism and the relationships between carbon dynamics and environmental stress responses.
Career
modifierHe studied biochemistry, microbiology, physiology and chemistry at the École Normale Supérieure de Cachan (France), and passed the agrégation in biochemistry & biological engineering in 1983. He received his Ph.D. at Trinity College Dublin (Ireland) in 1987, under the supervision of Professor Keith F. Tipton. He was appointed teaching assistant and then lecturer at the University of Bordeaux 1 (France) in 1987. In 1992, he moved to the National Institute of Agronomical Research (Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique, France) as research scientist, working in plant science laboratories in Bordeaux (France), Orléans (France) and Glasgow (Scotland). He was appointed as Professor of Plant Physiology and Molecular Biology in 1998 at the University of Rennes 1 (Brittany, France). [1] [2]
Scientific work on environmental stress
modifierHis Ph.D. in biochemistry and his fundamental research on molecular mechanisms have led him to investigate regulations of stress responses in diverse biological models (mammals, plants, microorganisms), with a focus on carbon metabolism, carbohydrate regulation and oxidative stress [3]:

This mechanistic analysis of abiotic stress responses in plants results from studies of model plants, such as Arabidopsis thaliana [4], of major crops, such as rice [5], or of plants of ecological and patrimonial importance, such as Kerguelen cabbage / Kerguelenkohl.
Science and society issues
modifierHis interest for science and society issues has led to publications related to conservation, transgenesis and the independence of fundamental research, with the exchange of contrasting viewpoints:

Textbooks
modifierHis textbook on cellular and molecular biology, co-authored with Laurence Fontaine and Valérie Guillaume, (“Biologie et physiologie cellulaires et moléculaires : transmission des savoirs et préparation des concours “, De Boeck Supérieur) is intended for graduate and post-graduate students involved in the preparation of the agrégation competitive exam in life sciences. [10]
Breton language literature
modifierHis poetry and literary translations (Hugh Mac Diarmid, Rainer Maria Rilke, Ernest Hemingway, Silvio Rodriguez, Colm Tóibín) in the Breton language are published in the literary review Al Liamm. [11] [12]
