google translation toolbar like web portal for quick English meanings of French words in web pages

Hi there,

How many of you use the French Wikipedia to brush up on that high school French, but need to constantly lookup French words for English meanings. The Google translation toolbar only translates from English to French, not from French to English. (Their whole web page translation is not what I want, I want to read the French).

I have prepared a webpage portal that allows the French Wikipedia to be viewed. From there, a right click on a word in the fr.wikipedia.org will pop up the English meaning. The portal with explanation of how to use it is at:

http://www.securecottage.com/cgi-bin/dictionary.cgi

There are other languages involved, but I use it mainly for French. I am wondering if there is a need or wish for a utility like this. For the intermediate French learner who can get the sense of a sentence but still needs to lookup a lot of words to understand the whole meaning.

It is like rikai-san but it is not a toolbar.

This translation popup tool has become a gadget on the English wiki for almost a year now under the name of GoogleTrans. It has been ported to 6 other wikis as well. I use the tool to read French articles where I need to translate a word ever 2 or 3 sentences. The help page for the googletrans gadget is at:

Question about verifiability

Good evening,

I'm not a francophone, and many years have passed since my French classes, therefore perhaps I'm having some difficulty expressing myself. I would like to know, sincerely, to what degree do you follow the verifiability policy (WP:V) in this project, since from the very beginning of my participation here I'm having a conflict with one (in fact more than one) of your administrators, namely Utilisateur:Voxhominis, who insists in keeping one of your articles, a biography, under a fake name invented by himself, as opposed to the name (or names) the person described in the article is documented with. The article is Maria Pia de Laredo, a fake name Voxhominis (and others perhaps) defend, even if they already confessed that that name was an artificial creation, applying the French law of naming children to a foreign country, in this case Portugal. All my editions aimed at removing that fake information from that article are met with reversions by Voxhominis, inclusively removing the image of the person which I placed there to decorate the article.

My appeals at stopping this irresponsible behaviour at the appropriated discussion Discussion:Maria Pia de Laredo/Neutralité were met with total silence, while the reversion came, fatal as the Sun in the morning, reposing the fake material in the article. Perhaps in English I would be able to express myself better, and I really would like to know if WP:V is really followed in this project. Islands with strange names

Hello, I noticed that you named Ilhéu Chão and Ilhéu de Fora, two small islets of Madère, as Chão and Fora. The result is a bit strange, since the second name can't be separated from the first in those cases, as "Fora" and "Chão" are not real names, but adjectives. The first means "Islet plain" and the second "Outer islet". What is the usual here for those situations?--Darwin (d) 12 mars 2010 à 11:21 (CET)

Hmm, sounds odd indeed. They could be renamed something like Îlot de Chão, though I think keeping Portuguese names would sound better, since "Fora" and "Chão" are adjectives. Unfortunately my French is barely enough to get by on, if that good. The French Wikipedia article on "Nombre Grammatical" is extremely well-written; but it contains errors. It refers to a "quadriel" grammatical number, and mentions "sursunga", a language of New Ireland, as a language attesting such a number. First error: The language's name is "Sursurunga", not "Sursunga". Second error: it has been shown that what Sursurunga actually has is a "greater paucal", not a "quadral". Third error: the article itself cites no references to support the statement that Sursurunga has a "quadriel". In the discussion, there are references cited which say Sursurunga has a quadral grammatical number; but these references are out-of-date and have been superseded, and if one had followed up the references' references one would have discovered this. You came to the right place, and you don't have to try to say anything in French. Anyway, concerning all the different errors you mention, it appears (for example the first one) that no French is needed for a correction. Did you do so then? Furthermore, if you have personaly serious references to what you're arguing, they would be useful for the article (any references in English are possible).

I don't know anything about this topic personaly. Just do and correct as you think, but if you need me to translate something to the main contributors of this article, let me now it here or on my talk page.

I took out the whole sentence about "quadriel", but a robot undid that assuming it was vandalism. So I undid that undoing, and a human editor undid that also, referring me to a discussion. I found that discussion and found some references to some texts in German which are based on out-of-date information and which also mis-spelled the name of the language. I didn't want to undo the undoing of my undoing of the robotic undoing of my original edit; that's too much like an "edit war". I thought I should instead direct the more senior editors to the information I (and other English-Wikipedia editors) have found that indicates the newer and more correct information. Translating en:Deekshabhoomi to French language

Hello! I am en:Shivashree from India. I have been working on a project to translate the article en:Deekshabhoomi in major languages of the world.

Deekshabhoomi is a historical place in India where about 380,000 depressed class people converted to Buddhism on October 14, 1956 along with their leader Dr. B. R. Ambedkar. There is 55th anniversary of the event in the next month. We are trying to translate this article in major world languages by the time of this occasion. This article has already been a DYK article on English Wikipedia. It has been translated in Japanese through this project. Thai translation is being done. Urdu stub has been created. I would appreciate if someone of you can translate it to French.

J'ai récemment traduit un article vers la langue française mais je ne trouve pas suffisament de sources en français pour compléter la biographie, malgré un coverage important dans les médias québecois, il n'ont pas fait de bio. Est-ce que je peux donner des références anglaises?

Aussi, pour cet article est-ce okay de mettre une quote en anglais? Je n'aimerais pas traduire une citation de quelqu'un car il vaut mieux respecté les dires originaux.

Oui les sources en langues étrangères sont acceptées, du moment qu'elles sont respectueuses de Wikipédia:Sources. Il est par contre pertinent de mettre le titre de la source et d'indiquer une traduction du titre. :) Après il est bon d'utiliser au maximum des sources dans la langue française si elles existent pour faciliter la vérification. Commencer Wikipédia en français? A priori vous pouvez commencer où vous voulez dès l'instant que vous pouvez écrire dans un français convenable (ce qui semble être le cas). Vous pouvez rédiger des articles, ou même vous occuper de la maintenance si vous le souhaitez, peu importe. Mais avant toutes choses, connaissez-vous déjà le fonctionnement de Wikipédia, avez-vous déjà contribué sur la Wikipédia en anglais?

Bon, et dites-moi aussi, puisqu'on est sur un bistro pour les non-francophones, si vous préférez que je vous répondre en anglais. Parce qu'autrement vous pouvez vous adresser directement sur le bistro en français si vous maîtrisez relativement bien notre langue.

I'm sorry. =/ Anyway to track vandalism on fr.wikipedia, you just need to go to recent modifications page. But make sure you'll be able to authentify a true vandalism in a foreign language for you, it could be counter-productive otherwise, sure you understand... French-language article Gargando on English Wikipedia

The article Gargando on the English Wikipedia consists mainly of French text. I do not know if it would be of any use to the French Wikipedia (it has no citations at all), but it does have more text than its equivalent here, so I thought I would ask and see if it could potentially be useful.
