Introduction

Un gratte-ciel (de l'anglais skyscraper) est un immeuble de très grande hauteur. Cette notion est apparue vers la fin du XIXe siècle notamment avec la reconstruction du centre-ville de Chicago après le Grand incendie de 1871 qui ravagea la ville. Plus particulièrement, on considère le Home Insurance Building (1885, 42 mètres, 12 étages) comme le premier gratte-ciel. Aujourd'hui, la plus haute structure du monde est une tour de 828 mètres, il s'agit de Burj Khalifa (Dubaï, Émirats arabes unis).

Les exemples d'architecture les plus anciens aux États-Unis se répartissent en deux foyers principaux.

Le premier se situe dans la moitié orientale, où l'on trouve des témoignages très anciens de la culture des Mound Builders qui construisaient des tertres zoomorphes et des pyramides de terre pour enterrer leurs morts. Située dans la vallée du Mississippi, la ville de Cahokia comptait au XIIe siècle entre 15 000 et 30 000 habitants. Le site, classé au patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO, possédait quelque 120 tumulus et/ou temples.

Le Sud-Ouest est la seconde région qui abritait des civilisations amérindiennes disparues au moment où Christophe Colomb « découvre » l'Amérique : les sites archéologiques les plus connus viennent de la culture Anasazi comme Mesa Verde (Colorado) et Chaco Canyon (Nouveau-Mexique), tous deux classés au patrimoine de l'humanité. Occupé depuis 1150, Acoma est le plus ancien pueblo des États-Unis : il s'agit d'un village aménagé sur une mesa et constitué de maisons à toit plat construites en adobe, une brique de terre crue séchée au soleil. Elles tiennent grâce à des poutres en bois apparentes. Leur forme cubique et leur enchevêtrement donnent aux villages cet aspect si singulier qui sera repris par la suite par les Américains (style pueblo).
